Judyann Affronti: La Mujer
La Mujer is any woman, all women. She is any age and imperfectly perfect. She is a 1920’s “flapper”, a flamenco dancer, a boho-chic millenial. The background wallpaper is a traditional paisley and floral, but overlaid with topsy-turvy lotus flowers, ancient feminine symbols of rebirth, fertility and enlightenment. Her dress and headress are African wax prints. The flower corsage in her hair and her pink rouged cheeks are decidedly girly, but her painted red lips are set in determination. Her pendant contains the symbol of the feminist movement and the empowerment of women. She has survived centuries of inequality and minimalization, motherhood and misogyny, and more recently Covid and home schooling.
