Gary H. Berson: Who’s Shouting?
The end result is unplanned. I never know where the imagery will lead until I get there. My truly unique experiences and observations of everyday life reflect my focus. And this focus always impacts my images. I cannot be weighed down by a camera and assorted peripherals, so I use my cell phone alone to capture these fantastic finds. The best camera for the job is always the one I have with me.
I use three connected lenses to create my art. First I use the lenses of my eyes to see the image. Then I use a camera lens to capture each image with precision in a fleeting moment. Finally, the lens of digital software tools to manipulate images and create works that spark with energy and are often at odds with the original subject and its context.
I use digital photography in convoluted ways to play with the colors, shapes and patterns of the images in my photos. I let the images speak to me, listening to what they have to say. Each one is telling a different story. After spending time studying them, I create more of what I like to focus on and less of what I do not. Often, the end result is an incredibly dynamic combination of color, light and texture amongst varying degrees of abstraction.
The changes in these elements of the original image are bound together by the new shapes and patterns. These details completely obscure the original subject matter, leaving it up to the viewer to contemplate its relevance in the piece. I have my images printed on acrylic panels to both capture and share my feelings with the resulting reflectiveness and boldness in these vibrant images.
I am an underrepresented artist, in that I do not have or hold any affiliations or degrees, in regards to my photography educational background. I have never been a Studio Artist, though I spent years creating photography as art using a 35mm camera with access to a darkroom for the development of black and white exposures only. My introduction into the Art World came from museums along with viewing the personal collections of others.
