Dara Tesse: Wild Strawberry
This piece “Wild Strawberry” is meant to evoke childhood in the summertime; a child running wild and carefree through the fields of wildflowers, berries, and insects, taking time to examine every creature or petal or leaf, with a sense of wonder. It is based on my daughter and her love and fascination with the natural world. This piece is one of a series of four heads, each representing a different season. Here, I use the traditional Renaissance technique of majolica to achieve layers of translucent color, highlighting the flora and fauna, while keeping the figure more subdued in its natural terracotta hue. The creatures and flowers serve as adornment to the human form, transforming into hair and jewelry.
